A parliamentary majority for MDP and a Cabinet reshuffle!

After a hard-fought parliamentary election, the ruling party (MDP) seems to have acquired two seats less than the amount acquired by the opposition (DRP). Yet, leading figures of MDP have publicly stated that they have no doubt that when the dust settles, and when the final results are announced, they would get the majority of the 77 seats in the parliament.

Though the current results are based on preliminary results announced by the Elections Commission, it is not anticipated that these figures would change when the final results are announced by the Commission in a few days time. So how would MDP be able to get a majority?

1. They need to get at least 39 seats to get a simple majority. A source close to the MDP leadership tells me that they are aiming to get 40 seats before the end of the month. That means they need to convince 14 elected members to switch to MDP. Where would these 14 members come from?

2. There are 13 independent members according to the preliminary results. It is possible that the ruling party could persuade about 9 of those to join MDP. But even if that happens, the party would still need another four seats to get a majority.

3. One option would be to make peace with Gasim’s Jumhooree Party and Dr. Hassan Seed’s Gaumee Party. That would bring 3 more seats. I do not believe that Gasim would openly challenge the ruling party with just the single seat that his party won. Dr. Hassan’s Gaumee Party won only two seats. Of those two, Riyaz Rasheed’s seat appears to be a soft target for MDP if they can convince him to switch allegiance.

4. There are also unconfirmed rumors that MDP and President Nasheed have been in touch with some DRP members such as Mahloof and Alhaan in order to persuade them that their political future is with a vibrant party such as MDP and not with a party led by an outdated leadership.

5. Either way I think MDP could very well get a majority in the parliament. But they would need to get a lesson from the results of this election and try to correct some of the mistakes that they have done after the election of Nasheed as President. They need to replace some of the incapable appointments with more appropriate people.

6. People such as Meemu Sappey, Jameel, Dhiyana, Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, Kerafa Naseem and some Provincial State Ministers such as Mohamed Naseer need to be replaced. Zaki could be sent as some ambassador and Mohamed Naseer could be put in charge of Gan Airport or something! But I would like to think that people such as Dr. Shaheed (despite not being MDP members) have done enough to suggest that they could continue to keep their cabinet post. But the bottom line is that some people need to go.
The ruling party should also ensure that brutal ex-leaders such as Gayyoom and Adam Zahir are brought to justice. The public demands this and there will be no healing until these chapters are finally closed!

  2. You must be joking. Mahfool is head over heels in genuine love with Gayoom. He will remain a faithful lover to the very end. And Ahlan Fahamy is a donkey. Probably the only live one in Maldives.

  6. This is what revolves around bushrys small universe... This is Far from truth. Most of those so called independents re actually dependents of Drp.So the opposition has already got the majority

Its unlikely that nasheed reshuffles the cabinet at this point. After 4 -5 months of ignoring the coalition ( Gasim, Hassan) that helped him to win the election in october, MDP has again started to talk abt a coalition with this sudden fall...This is a signal that possibly says they need the support of them again, but yea it was higly expected to reshuffle the cabinet had The MDP win with an outright majority...

  7. President Nasheed should do some house cleaning.... Hihthirikurun My ASS....give the bastards what they deserve and bring them to justice.

Some DRP members are wolfs in sheep's clothing, they can never appreciate democracy and are unable function within a democracy.

What Anni should do is arrest the members of DRP who stole millions of our money. These are the very same people who go elected to the parliament, using out stolen money to buy votes.

  8. Also Does President Naseed also thinks that Golhaabo is Above the Law.

Bring Golhaabo and crooks to justice. Otherwise these people will kill democracy and bring another Golhaa family member to Verikan.

  9. We need to form an organization to hunt down people who stole our money and our rights and bring them to justice.

We need Volunteers, Lawyers and MP's to support this cause. I hope MP Reeko Moosa forms such an orzanisation to bring these people to justice.. or any Ex MDP MP could do the job.

Do you really think people like Yamyn or Jangiyaa Nazim, or Redwave Saleem are NO MORE CRIMINAL since they got elected. NOP these people are still thieves and must be brought to justice.

  13. Analysis:

The MDP won a total of 48,000 votes (31 per cent of the total votes cast); the DRP only won 39,000 (25 per cent). Even if you combine the DRP and the PA's votes, the two opposition parties only won 47,400 votes – still less than the MDP. In fifteen constituencies, the MDP candidate lost by less than 100 votes. In seven constituencies, the MDP lost by fewer than 50 votes.

The reason why the MDP lost so many seats, by such narrow margins, is because the pro-reform vote was split between the different parties that make up the ruling coalition government. The constituency of Fuvahmulaku Dhekunu is a classic example. The DRP won the seat with 817 votes. The MDP candidate polled 717 votes and the Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) candidate polled 203 votes.

But, if the MDP had entered into an alliance, the DQP and Republican parties would have demanded that the MDP withdraw many of its candidates. Under these terms, the alliance would have won more seats but there would be fewer card-carrying, loyal MDP MPs. Would such a scenario have made the president stronger or weaker than he currently is?

As far as math is concerned, this was no crushing victory for Maumoon and Yamin. Just because the DRP/PA won the most seats in parliament, the fact does not mean they are the most popular party in the country. The vagaries of the first-past-the-post, 'winner takes all' electoral system explains this apparent anomaly.

On the other hand, a minority of loyal MPs is worth more than a majority of traitors anyway.

  14. once i thought that you are a great journalist.. maybe you were, till you divorced your wife. now you sound like a very bitter person who hates all the others in this planet for what happened to you. why do you hate old Gayyoom so much? is it beacuse he is good friends with your ex-inlaws? if u love your ex so much, you should try to get her back by showing love n some respect towards her, her family n friends. this type of hatred won't do u any good. it's not good for health even. now u sound like an insane person. it's time you try to find a new girl n start writing some really nice articles instead of the rubbish u r writing now!!

  15. Dream on! After drinking Sula Shiraz and remaining high on ganjaa, MDP can only hallucinate! Its fine for us if MDP supporters continue to hallucinate and imagine that they will still have a majority in the Parliament.

Comments like "just because DRP/PA won seats doesn't mean...." etc. are really understandable, considering the amount of self pity and sobbing going on in MDP's camp.

But, the reality of the day is, wihin 6 months from the Presidential Elections, people have realized that Anni is a hoax! After winning the election with the help of the Alliance, MDP's priority was to attack his Alliance partners instead of focusing on DRP. MDP's leaders thought that DRP was finished for good and that they could rule this country forever. Not only that. Anni's arrogance and utter disregard for the law, his blatant abuses and the appointment of traitors and criminals to high profile government posts, challenging and threatening the public and openly drinking and using drugs were just too much fo our muslim society to accept.

This is just the beginning. My advice to MDP would be ...BE AFRAID! BE VERY AFRAID! As Maumoon said during the victory speech, those responsible for all that has happened will be made to pay for all this.

Just wait and watch. The fireworks will begin soon. DRP will kick out several ministers from the cabinet through no confidence votes just as "appetisers!"

  16. Yes, MDP can take a calculator and continue to do some maths and still win a majority in the parliament in theory! Thats all they can do.

Wake up you idiots! The people of this country have spoken. And in case you are still asleep, let me repeat the news again. Its DRP and their supporters who have a decisive majority in parliament, thanks to Anni!

However much MDP tries to change the verdict of the public, by trying to buy MPs they will not succeed. The elected independent MPs are no idiots. They know that they will have to answer to their constituents. So they will not move to MDP. And in any case whatever for? What will they gain? On the contrary they will loose their credibility. So there is no chance for MDP to buy any MPs as Bushry hopes!

As for DQP and Republicans, why the sudden iterest from MDP to "make peace with them"?? Dr Hassan and Mr Qasim are not fools. They know when they have bitten by a snake once. They will never support MDP as long as Anni is the President. They probably will support DRP especially if there is a new DRP leader.

Yameen has promised to make the new Majlis very "exciting"! It doesn't take a genius to realise that under the current constitution, which has been drafted with the specific purpose of limiting Maumoon's powers, there is no real power with the President. Without the blessing of the Majlis, Anni will just be a symbolic "President".

So much for all the grand ideas of unconstitutional Provinces and whole sale of National assets to so-called foreign investors who are nothing but Anni's Conservative friends who are trying to cash in for the support they had extended to him in the past.

  20. Putting Ali Hashim as the acting AG shows that Anni wants a trustable person for AG. He not a lawyer. Also he is a very busy man, specially at a time economic hardship in the world.

So the conclusion of this that Anni cannot trust anyone else in the cabinet and is very conscious of any legal case that may come to him. Is he feeling guilty?
