It’s time that the government replace Mohamed Naseer with a more capable Provincial Minister in the Southern Province

When Mr. Mohamed Naseer was appointed as the Minister of State for the newly formed Southern Province, some people suggested that it was I who promoted his appointment because he is my relative. Well. Mr. Naseer is indeed a relative but why would I promote a relative for a political post when I would not promote even my own self?

The fact of the matter is that Mr. Naseer is a bad appointment and the sooner that the government remedies this mistake the better for everyone involved – especially the long suffering people of Addu and Fua Mulah.

Mr. Naseer is an engineer by training and he is gifted in his profession. But he lacks the personality or the charisma to lead the people of the most industrious two atolls in the country. Not only do many people (including MDP members) criticise the government for this misinformed appointment, many are disillusioned and disappointed about a future that awaits them with a slow and uncharismatic Minister who obviously lacks zeal, vision and drive – all three elements which we look for in our Provincial Minister.

Now, one may wonder who would be an ideal replacement if the government were to make a U-turn and replace Mr. Naseer. I do not – even for one minute – suggest that Mr. Naseer should be sidelined and rejected. What the government could do is to appoint Mr. Naseer as the in charge of the Gan International Airport – something that is more akin to Mr. Naseer’s profession.

(While we are on the subject of Gan Airport, let me also suggest that we could rename Gan after some historic leader for the Southern Province - How about “Hussain Rahaa or Afeef Didi International Airport”?).

A relatively young and educated person with drive and dedication such as the current Managing Director of STO (Shahid) or Mohamed Waheed (Wadde) or someone with similar credentials would be an ideal choice to replace Mr. Naseer.

Ask Mohamed Naseer how many times he has visited Fua Mulah since his appointment? Ask him why he spends more time in the capital Male or in Bangkok than in, say, Fua Mulah or even Hulhudhoo or Meedhoo? Ask him why he has to visit Gan in the night so often to have "coffee" with friends?

Ask him why he isn’t doing things such as the following:

1. Invite investors such as Lecute, Sonee Hardware, Sonee Sports, ADK, Reef Side, Sea Gull, Sun Front, Villa, Salsa, etc. to the Southern Province. Hold a two day workshop to brief potential investors to extend branches of their businesses to the Southern Province.

2. Prepare a feasibility study and promote the building of an exclusive diver’s resort at Kandi Hera Island in Addu Atoll.

3. Promote the building of a seaplane base in the lake of Fua Mulah instead of building an airport there.

4. Develop the historic sites in Fua Mulah and Addu so that tourists could visit such places.

5. Develop a seaplane landing area in the lagoon of Gan Island.

6. Promote the construction of a large hotel at Koatte in Hithadhoo, and lease land to potential investors to build guest houses, souvenir shops, dive shops, etc. at the seaside of Maamendhoo in Hithadhoo.

7. Promote the building of a golf course in Gan airport or Villingilli resort.

8. Compile a project to pave the roads and build water and sewage systems in Hithadhoo and Fua Mulah and extend the project to other islands of the Province.

9. Promote local and educational and medical tourism to the Southern Province by building guest houses, hotels, picnic islands, shopping complexes, Cineplex, international hospital, international schools, university, flying school, etc in the Province.

10. Declare Vision 2020 for the Southern Province to achieve all the above and even more, by 2020 so that the Southern Province becomes the number one region in the country in terms of literacy, education, international tourism, local tourism, transshipment, etc.

I doubt that the current Minister of State for the Province has the drive, the courage and dedication and support from the people to work towards such a vision. I know that by stating this so publicly I would incur his wrath and perhaps the wrath of the government. But those readers who have been following my writings over the years would know that I have no personal needs or wishes but rather wishes for my island, my atoll, my province – and most importantly – my country.

The government has nothing to lose in making this adjustment. Let’s forget party politics and appoint a capable leader to lead the long suffering people of Addu and Fua Mulah.

  1. Mr Bushree. I do belive that Mr. Naseer is not the right choice to be the state minister of Dehkunu Province. But, at the same time I also belive that those 10 projects (or opinions) that you mentioned are very much important, yet surely not practical at all, given the present situations.

If we are asking Mr. Naseer to resigne, then there is no single reason for another person from Addu to become the next province minister. Next, the projects which you have mentioned are more easy said than done. Just take the simple case faced by the present Fisheries Minister Didi. When he mentioned of a fish processing plant is Addu, he also had to announce that there will be a "Mas Hikkaa" factory in Fuahmulak. This is where the problems will begin. Whether it is right or wrong, there is a jelousy between these two atolls when it comes to development. Neither of them wants a project to be taking place in each others atoll.
In the list mentioned above, there is surely more projects based towards Addu. I know and I belive that, it makes sense economically and prectically, yet not so politically.
In this case, though I belong to Addu, I am afrid, I may not see our province ending up as the best developed province in future. This may be a comment many Addu people may not like, yet its the reality.

  4. Naseer is a man of integrity. He is not a politician who ran for public office. His job is to get things done. He will get things done for the South. He may not have advertised publicly or told you, Bushree of the work he is doing to develop the south, but when you see the results you would accept the errors you have made by trying to degrade a man like Mohamed Naseer.

  5. Hello Anonymous.. dont blame bushry and dont use fear tactics. Mohamed Naseer sucks anyone who accepts Ganjabo's offer will be degraded and not be trusted! they are all after the money not the integrity and things done. I think you need to do some good homework of the local politics...its all lies, decieving the poor citizens, spreading unislamic agenda and destroying the future generations. Go to hell with your integrity and get things done!

  6. I totally agree with Mr. Bushry. We haven't seen anything happening in this province so far. I think it's now the correct time to replace Mr. Naseer as he isn't physically fit for this job either. This is nothing personal but a very wrong choice of Mr. Nasheed. President Nasheed cannot keep on protecting all these unfit big shots unlike Mr. Gayoom did in his 30-year dictatorship.

I'm very much against Mr. Bushry's 1st opinion inviting top Male' business companies to invest in Addu. We see better ways and better foreign investors to invest this region.

We have a very good sea port linked with an airport with well infrastructure with many many other things beneficial to this region.

But question is who is going to do this? So far Mr. Naseer was incapable even to think about this and his time is now over.

I urge the current government to replace Mr. Naseer with a suitable educated guy as soon as possible.

  7. Mr.Bushry i have to agree with u on every single issue u have raised regarding the competency of newly appointed Provincial State Minister Mr. Naseer.

Bushry i have only one thing to say regarding this Appointment by Newly elected president Mr.Nasheed, Bushry no offense, I am a firm believer that President Mr.Nasheed lacks competence in every angle of his administration as a PRESIDENT of a country, meaning been a street boy does not mean he can be a country's leader, both jobs are tremendously different, therefore a person who is the top executive of a nation who is not competent will no doubt make silly and stupid mistakes, therefore Mr.Nasheed's appoint and other decisions will be of less worthy to the people and of course those decisions will be blunders for the people. I agree Mr.Nasheed has no choice, but to do things to deliver his pledges which he made to the people during his presidential campaign, therefore there might be positive movements but which will not give a complete solution to the people for a long term.

Mr.Bushry i have a feeling that Mr.Nasheed is putting a price tag in every thing he do. and i feel that Mr.Nasheed will put a price tag for Maldives and might sell this country to British Conservative Party and their stakeholders.

I think the same question Bushry has raised to ask from Mr.Naseer is similar to ask from Mr.Nasheed, just one question let me write here; how many times did President Mr.Nasheed has visited Addu Atoll and Fuah Mulah after assigning presidents office? over the last 100 days did he visited the Southern province?? No not, just one time he went addu and came back, that is for his political agenda. Another question did president Mr.Nasheed had met or organised any today or one day workshop with local investors and addressed the local business opportunities in addu atoll and fuah mulah?? no not a single meeting with local investors. Mr.Nasheed is interested to have a stake in every business which the country do under his leadership with foreign parties, specially British Conservative Party.

I think a person who is incapable and in competent for a top post of a nation will no doubt will make number of mistakes. Therefore the root course for the blunders which the county is experiencing today is due to the lack of presidents skill of Mr.Nasheed.

  9. Bushry is promoting his relative Shahid who is a much closer relative than Mohamed Naseer

  10. Dude this is one biased piece of writing. You obviously have something personal against Mohamed Naseer. If there is nothing happening in Addu it's probably because people above Naseer, namely people like Anni doesn't want anything happening yet.

Your proposals are unrealistic. Anybody can list points like that with no intention of carrying them out. Heh. Instead of politically attacking Naseer, just one single individual, look at the big picture. It's Anni's government that's failing here miserably. Not Naseer. He is just a small player trapped in a world of dirty politics being masterminded by the MDP big guns.

So Mr. Bushry please stop spreading propaganda and picking on innocent people and who are you to suggest the names of other people for your own benefits. I have lost the little respect that I had for you as a journalists. Your writing credentials and integrity are questionable.

  11. And why bring in these already rich people from Male'? Why not give the opportunity for local businessmen in Addu to expand their businesses? I am sure there are better ways of engaging the community and improving the welfare of the people. Are we just going to rely on Villa and Sonee as if they were Gods or something?

Stop promoting your Male' business friends here. Addu people can do without those greedy unscrupulous Male' businessmen.

Mr. Bushry you have no vision. You are just a cheap pimp who is out here to spread propaganda for MDP and against people MDP want to get rid of.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anyway Villa can't help Addu. They are already in huge debts. But no, the government wants to give them the opporunity and finance from banks to expand into Addu. No local Adduans will get the opportunity to do business but the already rich Male' folks get more finance and help from the government to get richer and richer, thereby increasing the divide between the normal folk and the Universal/Villa/Sonee/Salsa elite folk. Bushry is a total baffoon who has no idea about what he's talking.

  13. Bushry ..I really agry about ur point. I think there are more capable persons then Mr Naseer. The goverment have to think about this matter and bring someone who can do this . If Anni whants southern province to be develop he have to bring someone more fit and have idear for the development .....

  14. I wonder why Bushree cant talk about Anni. I am sure most of the people now realised that Anni is complete shit! he is a dictator and he will not do anything good for addu.

  15. this article is proof enough that bushry's journalism stinks! he's trying to promote wadde who is corrupt to boot. shame on you bush.

    ReplyDelete
  16. he went to Bangkok? When? Before his appointment or after? Get your facts right man. You claim you are a journalist. Act like one. Do your homework first. A lot of your claims I am certain are just unfounded crap. He is old, true. He is uncharismatic maybe. But he is TRUE to his island, Atoll, Province, country and his post. That I know of him.

  17. The promise of this government, among others, is accountability. As such, for things done, and not done.

If any of the projects can be started, and is not due to Naseer's failure, then he should be thrown out, and made accountable. However, if the projects are not feasible, then he is not at fault.

Bushry : What you are doing is right. You should provoke these queries, thoughts. For they will keep all, the counselors, public an even the president on their toes.

  18. Naseer should introduce the islamic concept of development and build more mosques, start dharus classes organize quran competition and then pray for development.

  19. I think the provincial minister doesn’t have any authority to kick start development projects. If he does have freedom to kick start projects, im sure he would have done that. The problem is state ministers or provincial ministers are nothing but installed puppets of Nasheed to create a rigid social control over common folks.
Adduans can do lot of things to develop their atoll if they have what is known as political and economic freedom from centrally controlled politics of Maldives. Addu atoll is the closest to one of the largest fishing grounds in the Indian ocean. American Naval base just lies 300 miles south of addu atoll whereby tourisum could play a role here. Every day thousands of ships cross in and around Addu atoll which could be lot of money if we learn how to attract to them to our shores. We have lot ways to make forward but the thing is the negating politics of the current regime fashioned in disguise is playing tricks to under develop our atolls more and more to create the central havoc of Male as the burgeoning dictatorship.

  20. I totally agry with mr Bushry..He is man of visions.U all might think that he is crazy and full of unrealistic dreams.to achive something, u must dream, think, brainstorm and then place on paperwork,

The points he has mentioned here is rite..its doesnt mean all thiese things has to be done in overnight.as Bushry said, should have a master plane ..like vision 2020 or 2030 and i am sure withing 10 or 15 years time, this could be done if well planed a head..

I dont know about the leadership qualities of Mr Naseer..other than Mr bushrys comment, I never heard of ppl saying bad about Mr Naseer..

We need things to be doone for our people, our land and our neighbours

  28. I asked a non-Maldivian psychologist to read the speech President Nasheed gave where Nasheed commented that “They’ll see my ruthlessness…” This psychologist knows nothing of Maldivian Politics. I did not explain that there may have been a perceived threat. However, my psychologist friend stated that for someone to make such a threatening comment in the middle of such a freedom promoting speech, President Nasheed was definetely responding to a threat that he believes is real.

It is a threat which, this psychologist believes, President Nashhed has heard about but does not have direct evidence of. Until Nasheed has direct evidence, the President therefore cannot respond to this threat directly or else he may be accused of making false accusations. So, President Nasheed decided to warn against that threat in a veiled manner, but did not choose the way he did it wisely.

President Nasheed is, I believe, using the same language used against him to let those that have threatened him know that he is talking to them and that he is not afraid.

  29. Alhan Fahumees uncle Ahmed is a drug dealer, he joined DRP so he was released from jail. Plus Alhan fahmees younger brother was arrested for fraud stealing money from an HSBC bank account.

lol the guy has some nerve to contest a public post. He is full of dirty business, corruption and money hungry vulture. dont vote for him.

I wonder how much money Golhaabo gave him to saber rattle against MDP and real democrats.

If anyone mingles with Golhaabo and his Crooks then the person is corrupt to the core. Don vote for Alhan Fahumee

  30. I have heard rumours that Yamin and Jabir are drug dealers, when I see the pain in the eyes of those that tell me they have evidence of Yamin and Jabir’s drug trade, the fear, the anger in the eyes of these ‘gossipers’, I believe them, their pain is evidence for me…However, is this defamation? You see this is the problem, justice cannot be done because ppl are frightened to come out with the truth as it may be defamation.

I guess, when someting is important enough to a person, that person will come out with what they believe no matter what sacrifice it may require, many have suffered for ‘defaming’ ppl even if it has been the truth. I think, in this world, if a law goes against morality, you have to make a choice, and those who are strong, who have tremendous faith that suffering for justice is ultimately a source of Barakat for themselves and for others in the end, (even if that Barakat is in Jannah - the heavens) then they will break the law and go with morality. Press freedom? In an ultimate sense, freedom will not always be given, it often needs to be taken through an act of sacrifice and moral strength. So if press freedom is once again threatened, I hope that the strong will be strong enough to take it back, but thanks for your promotion of this idea of freedom, yes may we always be free.

  31. I have worked Mr. Naseer for several years. I know he's a lot more than an Engineer or the Airport in Charge. If I keep writing about Naseer I think I can write a whole book.

At one time I remember him reading stuff on the internet about the building of some high tech mega project happening somewhere in the world. This was before the intensifying of the Party Politics in Maldives.

Why would he read such stuff? Perhaps he might have a vision of such a project.

Now that Bush has suggested Naseer to be appointed as the in charge of Gan Airport. If Bush is aware of the airport business he might say that Naseer is better than Waddey and Shahid to be the Prrovince Minister.

The fact is the airports normally have almost all the facilities and business ventures a province may have. the difference is only the scale of such things.

To give readers an idea will list some stuff airports have.

    Runways
    Tillers and sea ports
    Cargo facilities and warehouses
Paved Roads, Water and Sewerage Systems, compact coral roads, Storm Water Drains
    Fuel Storage facilities
Training and Recruit facilities with labs
    Shops and Duty Free Shops
Power and Telecom and IT backbones
    Heavy Machinery

I know Naseer has full hands on experience on the above infrastructures in Gan Island and and at Male Airport and in Maamigili Airport.

That means he has the knowledge to duplicate a developed island like Gan to another needful island.

The problem is that we are presently - as Bush should know pretty well at the transitional stage of a badly handled Governance System.

We need to have working constitution that enables us to do things without having any legislator y bottlenecks.

Naseer himself can't operate himself with the issues he has to tackle without qaanoony authority if you like.

This is what I think of him

  34. Greetings,
First I must apologize in advance for posting here as I am not a national of the Maldives and therefore certainly don´t have your knowledge and understanding of the local situation.
In the context of a field trip done to propose a solution for sewage water treatment in Fuvahmulah, I did however meet Mr Mohamed Naseer and was extremely impressed by the quality of his person, his vision and maybe more importantly, understanding of the most pressing issues today - namely how to conjugate population growth, economical wealth with environmental protection and enhancement. I travel and have met a lot of people in the course of my life and have rarely met someone of such clarity of understanding and cutting edge information. Now. Yes, that doesn´t build a golf for x island, or promotes investors meetings (and the whole list of what he should do according to Mr Bushry) over 2 year period. But maybe it can all be built in a period of 4 years? but in a way that will have minimal adverse impact. That is the key. So yes, in the meanwhile hunger may prolong, but if you build over the 2 year period a golf that down the line will empty your fragile water reserve and then cause hunger without remedy for the future starting in 6 years, as many people do right now in the world, then are you committing a grave error - if not a crime at a secundary level, for future generations.
Now if you take 4 years to build your golf and unite proper investors, investors who agree to do things in a certain way, and do it in such a way so that in 20 years from now, the operation is still running and living and no hungger is created, then it´s well worth it!!!
I understand well urgency but sometimes it is better to take more time and really have a look at all the options before putting all efforts and investment into any kind of development. Of course, this time of research, learning and understanding can in no way be an excuse for not working, this is lots of work!!!!! Also: I found him one of the very few Maldivians I met during my 3 month stance which had a remarkable knowledge of his people and lineage. I found him very loving towards your nation and very informed about your ancient roots and history. So ... With all due respect for liberty of opinion, I did wish to make this tribute to him. I would finish by saying that I also found him one of the so very few politicians, unfortunately, sincerely concerned and truly dedicated to find solutions I have ever met. Now is that enough? Maybe not, but it´s already fundamental, no? You do want a man with a certain vision in power ... and can be complemented if he is well surrounded (good team of co.workers / advisors). Now again ... I do not know enough to maybe give full validity to my experience and exchange with him but I would certainly keep him in the loop when it comes to the development of the Atolls if I was a wise ruler. If you are in for a quick buck then yes, maybe he is not the right person. Give him maybe a bit more time? ...
