Regulating all shops to close at 9.00 pm

As per government regulations, the shops in Male are to close at 11.00pm. Over the past years there has been a debate as to the pros and cons of this regulation. Some argue that the shops should close earlier (perhaps at 9.00pm, so that staff could spend some time with their families. Many staff who work at shops start their work at about 9.00 in the morning and goes on until 11.00 at night. They only get few minutes off during prayer time (just enough to pray or have lunch). This restricts the amount of quality time that they could get with their families. It would help boost family relations and improve the social fabric of the nation if we regulate the shops to be closed at latest 9.00pm.

I too operate a shop in Male and would love to close the shop at 9.00pm, but if I do it unilaterally then I stand to lose business. If it is regulated and if all shops close at 9.00pm then I would be very willing and happy to do that. This may appear to be a relatively small matter to the politicians but it can have a big social impact.

For those businessmen who are worried that this could reduce their sales, I would like to say that when all shops close at that time then we would all be in the same boat and the customers would change their shopping habits accordingly.

  2. Yeah right! In most countries, normal shops (except for Seven Eleven type of shops) close at 6pm or some at latest 9 pm. Restaurants and cafes and Seven Eleven type shops could be open til later but the rest could close at latest 9pm. Regulations could be modified to address this.

  3. Bushry, why don’t you inscribe something concerning these killings in male? Is it not significant to you? otherwise you don’t have in the least concern in bringing this government answerable to these gang wars and fight. Or don’t you believe this elected administration is singing the similar song as Maumoon to gain vote, leaving the bunch of criminals in male to fight and destruct the reputation of police.
Bushry notify our president this isn’t Colombo , we don’t fancy to witness countless police wandering around in male ( one mile) with helmets and sticks in the name of security, this government ought to unearth an immediate solutions for this ( even if don’t have a good opposition doesn’t necessarily mean that this administration will get away with killings on the road ) . I voted president nasheed simply for one motive I wish for me and my family to walk in male with no panic and fear which maumoon fashioned.
We require a stern administration rather than at all times pin pointing, what maumoon did in his 30 years of terror. Please for god sake discover us a way out from this gangs and dismantle them. Godless us all ( note: please sideline this for a while: dhathurufathuru and ayfoaraafashah, budget nai, free us from fear of killing male and other islands please )

  6. Why just close shops? Why not shut down internet, and cut of the phone system as well? And yeah cut down electricity from 6am to 6pm would be a good money saver. Allow sex workers. Cut of TV. Introduce a porn channel. Bushree for once can you come up with something original? These are all other people's ideas you are claiming as yours. So sad.

  7. Bushry,

One of the very few good suggestions tht have come either from you or the inner circle of Presidency.

    Close all Shope at 9pm
    Allow Discos on Weekends
Make Farukolhufushi, Kuda bandos, Aarah, Feydhoo Finolhu as picnic Islands for People of Male'(ONLY) to go on picnic.

Maybe this a suggestion some may not like but in a democratic society like ours it has to be .

    Legalise lesser form of drugs
Kissing and hugging in public should not be considered as an act of crime and punished.
Allow the freedom of any religion that people may wish to practice.

PUT ALL THE MULLAH BEHIND THEIR HOME OR BARS

  8. One of the most disturbing article you keep writing over and over again. Most striking for me is that you mentioned that you support this idea, you have a shop in Male' but you do not intend to close it at 09pm because others might get a little bit sale within that 2 hours time. Thats pathetic. If you believe in this so much, please be a role model. do you have the guts to close your shop at 09pm and let your staff have family time. If so may be others will follow. You do not need government regulation to close your shop at 09pm.
Secondly, the shopkeepers working from 09am - 11pm with just prayer break and lunch/dinner break, they would have so plenty of overtime money i guess. As per new laor law, its 8 hours maximum dude. Now there is a law but you do not want to follow and i just wonder what would happen if govt ask you guys to close the shops at 09pm. would you still quitely keep it open till say 10-1030-11pm. get some more sales. huh some more profit, some more money.
Com'on bush these are rather insignificant issues you as a renowned blogger should be writing about while the country is constantly in threat of gang wars, robbery, terrorism (yet to emerge in its full power), Drugs, division, poverty, lack of proper education, health systems, awareness on different topics such as smoking, how to parent, how to self respect and respect others unconditionally. plsss

  10. ya i think its good idear.

but still even if the shops are closed doesn't mean that staffs get more time. most of the employers do make their staff work loner even on odd working hours.. so i think it will be much more beneficial if the government could implement the laws n regulations made in order to secure labour rights
