The upcoming Majlis elections will be a turning point for our newly emerging political landscape. I believe that many new alliances will be formed depending on how the results of the Majlis elections turn out. Following are few of the predictions:
1. DRP and People’s Party would not get as many seats as they think they would get. Thasmeen, Yamin and (Jangiya) Nazim have lost their credibility.
2. IDP and SDP and SLP will not win any seats.
3. MDP will win about 29 seats.
4. (Dr. Hassan Saeed’s) Gaumee Party would win about 18 seats.
5. Jumhooree Party would win about 7 seats.
6. Adhaalath Party would win about 4 seats.
7. (Kutti) Nasheed would join Gaumee Party.
8. Dr. Munavvar would join Gaumee Party.
9. Jumhooree Party and Adhaalth Party could join a coalition with Hassan Saeed’s Gaumee Party making that alliance the biggest “party” (coalition) in the parliament (Majlis).
10. President Nasheed and the Vice President Dr. Waheed will call a mid-term election in 2011.

ReplyDelete1.Dr. Hassan Saeed said that it is undemocratic or wrong for MDP to request for majority in the Majlis. This is not true. In all democratic systems, the parties attempt to secure majority in the parliament. Even in Presidential system it is the same. Dr. Hassan Saeed used this argument simply to help Gaumee party to win more seats in the majlis. Therefore, this is a misrepresentation of the reality.
2.Dr. Hassan Saeed should know that the Government needs a majority to deliver on the promises they made to the public. New Maldives is therefore morally obliged to help MDP to achieve these promises, rather than trying to block MDP’s opportunity to facilitate majlis in its favour. Therefore, what new Maldives attempt to do now is morally wrong.
3.Gaumee party seems to promote an academic elitist agenda. Rhetoric such as we are “educated and others are not” is a form of discrimination. Calling MDP a government of activists, is a statement that disrespects many who fought on the streets to bring this democratic change to Maldives. Everyone does not get the opportunity to earn a doctorate. Some excel in vocational and technical professions. Goodness, effectiveness, and honesty are not in degrees earned. Many great leaders of the world did not have such paper qualifications. Said to see such discrimination directed at other parties.
4.Gaumee party tried to take credit for population consolidation, single session schools and health insurance. We have to be honest. Population consolidation was an idea floated when Ibrahim Hussain Zaki was Planning Minister. Single session school was an idea that had been around for a long time; Dr. Latheef as Education Minister brought this idea to the public first. Health insurance was an idea discussed when Ahmed Abdulla was Health Minister. Nothing is to be gained by trying to fool public.
5.This is the time for new Maldives to support the Government. It’s really too early to try to bring down this Government to win Presidency. Don’t ne so greedy for the top job. Please. Give this country a chance.
