Building the ultimate mega island for the Maldivians!

Vaavu Atoll is the smallest administrative atoll in the Maldives. There are about 19 islands in the atoll but only five of those islands are populated; and the whole atoll has a population of only about two thousand. But the government has to bear the overheads of an Atoll Office and many Island Offices and Schools and Power Houses and other infrastructure to support only 2000 people scattered across the seas of Vaavu Atoll. This is bad economies of scale. This is also against the spirit of decentralization.

Here I would like to put forward a predictably controversial proposal. I propose to relocate the 2000 people of Vaavu Atoll to a bigger atoll, provide housing for the residents and compensate them adequately. After this relocation, I propose to reclaim the whole atoll by doing deep-sea dredging. The reclaiming should be done to a height of at least ten feet above sea level. This landmass would be big enough to accommodate at least a population of three hundred thousand.

This would be a huge landmass (one island) - the ultimate safe-island which could accommodate almost 300,000 people. We could open for international bid and get a foreign party to reclaim and then build the infrastructure in this island.
This huge island could have mega facilities such as a huge transshipment harbour; huge international airport, large international university, many international schools, world renowned marine and environmental research centre, and industrial facilities and factories of all sorts. It could also have all the top-brands of hotels such as Hilton, Intercontinental, Sheraton, etc. The large island could also have factories to build cars and motorcycles and boat-building yards as well. Adjacent to the transshipment harbour, it could have dry dock facilities and farms too.
Like in Dubai we could sell land and housing plots and apartments and office space to international individuals and international organizations from there. This would be a multi-billion dollar project that could bring incredible revenue to us.

  1. Freedom of religion is first and foremost.
What to do you think guys?
Without freedom, there is no use of Mega islands. We need to be free from this fearful tool and be able to do critical thinkings and develop our full potential (out side the walls of religion). then we can make a plan of such big.
Now you may claim Dubai is a muslim state. fine lets be like dubai. NO restrictions on religion, very innovative ppl who belives in technology rather than dooms day or religious myth. SO, if you take true dubai as role model, i think should be fine!

  2. Why can't you guys get over with the issue of religion? Can't you think or do anything without bringing freedom of religion to the forefront? Why do you guys so badly need freedom of religion here in Maldives? If you want to practice whatever religion you want, or not to follow any religion go and get lost. And don't ever think of coming back here! We can build our nation on our own and make us a happy and prosperous with the blessings of the Almight Allah.

have u carried out depth survey of vaavu atoll? how much fill would we need? can we get enough to fill vaavu atoll?

wat about the reefs of vaavu atoll? wat happens to them? wat about the environmental cost of such a project?

we have to be realistic....we dont need crap like this

  4. I'm sure those multi-billion dollar investors can arrange some sand from Dubai to fill up Vaavu atoll big and good..

Who cares of freedom of religion? We'll lots of umm... 'international schools' that teach everyone to stay away from women, pig and alcohol. The uniform will be a veil of course.

    What say, Bushry?

  5. "world renowned marine and environmental research centre" was a laugh, though.

Haven't you heard? The latest research by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs says that we'll never run out fish.

Allah grants us Maldivians as many fish as we want from an apparently inexhaustible supply.

    Cool.

  6. R. Dhuvaafaru, was developed in 4 years as the new abode for the 4000 residents of Kadholhudhoo, at a cost of over Rf390 million – that’s a staggering hundred thousand rufiyaa per person. Th. Vilufushi, was developed at whopping cost of 340million rufiyaa – that’s over Rf 130,000 per inhabitant for the 2,500 odd people who will ultimately call the island, home. Only two islands have set us over three-quarters of a billion rufiyaa behind. If people in Dhuvaafaru, Hulhumale, Vilufushi and Male can have safe infrastructures in their islands, the other 190 islands would demand the same from their Government. The demands would be unstoppable. But developing 190 islands like Dhuvaafaru and Vilufushi – is that something any government can do? Bushry’s mega island may appear ludicrous but if the plight of our people in 50 years is to be anything other than buying land to settle down alongside Dalits in Indian ghettos, this is the only way to go. And after having studied Mauritius for over six months recently, I have absolutely no doubt that if we are to survive as a sovereign nation in the next century, we need a landmass that has a minimum area of at least 40 – 50 sq km in one piece. I could almost see a vast stretch of land disappear into the horizon on the Bodumohoraa faru!

  7. Is the Vavu atoll the best atoll to do this.
Agree Naimbe' but what are the implications on environment after this huge project?
We could do at the cost of environment, but our next generation has to pay for it.
Arn't there big enough islands (may be couple of them) and we can develop those islands with limited land reclamation.
I thought Addu and Laamu atoll has the biggest islands in the maldives.

  9. Hmmm .. looks like an idea from special ….. to the president to become rich, now that he’s promoting his dhambi dhari to politics sadly he’s got sons just like him. This can be very dangerous thing we have seen hulhumale project , and very recently airport project!! What this special idiot to the president was doing to airport project was interfered by anti corruption commission.
My my .. we can’t dig up a good administration “these politicians will be alike, self interest will appear primarily ” at this time these thugs are consuming the tart we’ll observe and witness.. amen ( I thought nasheed will be in charge of of the administration however I'm sorry? The image is quiet unusual. The special crooked to the president is doing all the mechanism) . What a Disgrace on our vathan edhey goi , one tyrant after the other in a democracy sticky tag. Best thing to do is we (civic) disappear from this country or die

  10. why mega islands?

How about a building a mega continent?

Bushre are you crazy or what? If you cant you live in a small island and be an islander then move to a bigger continent. Gayoom was right on one thing. Most of us have big Homes/houses in with gardens and vegetable groves in other atolls/islands.

We can go to these empty houses if we receive a good salary and and if facilities are there.

A better idea would be to Think about ways to increase peoples income so that we can move to these empty houses?Real salaries and income instead of earning peanuts.

Do you want to make another 10 islands like male. Look man people are laughing at Male' our capital. no empty space, no place to park your car bike or moor your dhoni. No pace to place a dustbin on the street n most roads dont have a side walk.

And you want to create more of these. And coral atolls are like living organisms it could dissolve into the sea due to acid rain or something. do you want to create an environmental disaster here so that in future no one could live here?

  11. All what we need is corruption free leaders and politicians who can work for the best interest of the PEOPLE AND COUNTRY, NOT the best interest of an individual or a party. we have an opportunity now, just stop rewarding party loyalists and appoint educated, experienced, corruption free people to do things (Im sure there are hundreds of people like this)

I am in Malaysia and look what we have here as an ambassador, I voted for Anni for a change yes, but not for him to appoint dick heads to various senior govt posts.

  12. Oppression of a few but yet intelligent thinkers and telling them to get lost is exactly where civilization stagnate.

I think the mega island theory is worth exploring. Vaavu atoll might be a good place to start. Yes Laamu has the largest island which is why red cross choose L Gan to develop as a save island. But actually the largest reefs and hence largest land can be reclaimed from Huvadhoo. But the huvadhoo reefs and ecosystem is very unique even from other Maldivian reefs and destroying them would be a huge environmental cost which will drastically reduce fishers.

the smallest atoll so would be a good starting point considering environmental destruction. Maldivians need to survive.

  14. Absurd idea. Why dont we first try and conquer the Moon So that we can build better schools, hospital, 3 room apartments for every one, universities and a park.

Think about priorities. Bushy is in in a dream world after his frequent travels to Dubai.

  15. Anni is doing it Right. Taking the Jobs Back to the Atolls where there is ample land.

Before we create another concrete monster like Male' We have a planned city/Atolls as soon as possible. Make architectural drawing and landscape drawings and hand over to Atoll Office/Island Office so that constructions are done in a planed fashion and are soothing to our eyes.

  16. I agry with bushry..

if we could make a mega island it will have a much more benefits than the negative effects..

if we are to develop around 200 uninhabited islands spendings are much more..
we cant build universitis, hospitals, schools, and bussinesses in smaller islands with less population.. even if we try to do it its impossible..but one thing we could do is reclaim a mass land on a long term . where we could facilitate all these facilities...
