President Nasheed – a benevolent (loving) dictator!

When President Nasheed declared Muleeaage as the official residence of the President, political critics such as Dr. Hassan Saeed said that it is unconstitutional to do so without amending the law. Wasn’t it Dr. Hassan who said that we could hold the Parliamentary elections even without ratifying the Elections Law? Wasn’t it Dr. Hassan who said that we can deal with drug addicts in contravention to the law because he felt that it was an ethical thing to do?

When it is convenient for Dr. Hassan, he says that it is alright to overlook the constitution and when someone else does so he is quick to criticise. If one follows the letter of the law to its full extent then it could be argued that President Nasheed should have waited for the amendment to the law before unilaterally deciding to move to Muleeaage. But we have to look at the spirit of the action. I’m sure that Dr. Hassan too would probably have moved to Muleeaage if he were elected President.

The same is true about the criticism coming from political foes such as Dr. Hassan regarding the declaration of provinces. We all agree that these things need to be incorporated into the law, but sometimes, depending on the political climate, the leadership of the country needs to move faster than the parliament who often drags its feet.

I would like to believe that we have embarked on a journey of “change” that needs daily – if not hourly – action and that we can’t wait for a Majlis who thinks that they are above everything (including the people of this country).

Judging from the signs I see, I think that President Nasheed is a benevolent dictator – the type of dictator that is actually good for a small country such as ours. Before you start shouting at me, let me give two examples of benevolent dictators. Number one that comes to mind if Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore. He sometimes stifled his political foes but above everything else he worked hard and brought prosperity and sincere goodness to Singapore. Not a single Singaporean will argue that Lee Kuan Yew was a bad leader even though he was sometimes “dictatorial”.!

The second example of such a leader is former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed – two very similar leaders who put country first. Look at the results of their labour. Singapore is now officially a “developed” country, and Malaysia is expecet6d to be a “developed” country by 2020.

At a time when the Maldives and the Maldivians aspire to be the “Singapore of South Asia”, we have to have a decisive leader who doesn’t get entangled on the legal mumbo jumbo and rather take action first and worry about the consequences later. Such a leader would instinctively know what’s best for his country and act accordingly. We can never reach such height if we have legal fanatics such as Dr. Hassan or (Kutti) Nasheed at our helm.

Shout at me or verbally attack me for what ever you like, but I’m willing to stand on one limb and defend this controversial argument of mine. If you disagree with me it’s your problem, not mine.

As far as I’m concerned President Nasheed is a benevolent dictator – the type that we should welcome and trust. I agree that he is a bit rusty. But who wouldn’t be in the situation he finds himself in. Give him time and I believe that he would make us the next Singapore and put us really on the world map – not as an environmental casualty that Gayyoom portrayed us to be, but rather as a country with a solid economy and a dependable social support system and an ethical population that trusts in each other.

By the time we reach that level we would have ended our preoccupation with politics (as the Singaporeans have done) and start concentrating on economics and hard work and reaping the fruits of our labour. That’s our destiny, and I believe we have a leader who can take us there.

  1. Bushry please come to sense man, why would you constantly protect what this labeled “ vathan edhey gothah (Ibrahim husen zaki, mausoom, kosheege shaffegu, amaa shafeegu, juha) is doing to our nation?
Why are you merely looking to Lee Kuan’s rules on developments, are you familiar with well how he dealt with the unlawful acts and drug offenders , he did not set out on building lui jalu, maafushi jalu, himmafushi rehab, and what we see at this point , is completely reverse of Singapore, our police force is paralyzed and DPRS guys are toothless.
Do you believe we have to have a good and strict policies to combat drug trafficking?
Do you distinguish how this idiot shaffeegu is dealing with inmates? somewhat we can call them outmates!! Is this Lee Kuan’s?
When it comes to money bags and self interests he turn out to be a Lee Kuan and other’s turn into jim carries or duffy duck !! You know what? You guys are on the threshold of creating another gayoom in a more democratic brand name which you call now party system .
Where’s the drug bill? , no one is bothered about that, still we have the unchanged law where a guy who’s in possession with 1 gram of heroin can be sentence to life imprisonment. Anni who was in jail many times so he’s more awake of this than any other person , but still he’s not even uttering a word about how to stop this inflow of drugs ( MDP’s fifth pledge). You know why? I think , Cause he now knows he should maintain this drug dealers in male to roam around ( for the votes) who controls 70% of our countries youth ( most of youths now belongs to some gang).
Lee Kuan was not a guy who was concerned about the votes or the parliament, he knows he’ll get the majority, he know his country is one of the safest places in this earth to live, on the other had look at this hellhole, killing mugging, robberies, rapes, pedophiles, and the most incapable state home minister amaa shaffeegu with no power to police, they only good at lifting vehicles. What a shame on the name of vathan edhey gothah

  3. Hehe. Hoping for a good future will be an excellent idea. But I just wonder where on earth we will end up if we keep on boasting the president like the way we did with Maumoon. It will be very near for him to be a real dictator than "a benevolent dictator".
Already there is no matured opposition party. The so called opposition DRP is too busy with protecting their mistakes of 30years and defending their leader. In a situation like this, I wonder what lies ahead of us if the strong figures of media start saluting the president for anything and everything done.

  4. Perhaps you may get different answers if you ask Malaysians and Singaporeans themselves. Singapore is essentially a one party country where you find a single malay cabinet minister and a socioeconomic stratification along race lines. If you look at Singapore, you can see that the move away from being occupied by politics is because of their need to make ends meet. You may not realize it - but there are many Singaporeans who find it difficult to make ends meet.

Malaysia's Mahathir as you say has been 'dictatorial'. He hand choose many Malay 'entreprenuers' to lead the charge to develop the bumiputras (malays) . But many of them were cronies of his and the results of his nepotism are what is causing the greatest problems in the country.

Definitely, both of these countries have made great strides in development. But at what cost.

Despite my opposing views, you do provide for good stimulation of the minds..

    Thanks

When the benevolence stops, they should go.

  9. Just one question, Wasn't the Previous President also a "benevolent dictator" during his first term or even second term?
Bush, anyform of Dictatorship is not acceptable. If a president can't be democratic and bring positive change at the same time, then the man is not suitable for the job.

  34. Bushry. as a writer who should be a role model you should be ashamed to glorify any form of dictatorship. Lee Kuan Yew and Mahathir may have brought economic prosperity to Singapore and Malaysia respectively, but when it comes to civil liberties and individual freedoms, those two countries fall far behind. Check how many opposition politicians are unfairly framed in Singapore and Malaysia. Does the name Anwar Ibrahim ring a bell? I don't agree with you that Anni is a "benevolent dictator". Anni is a democratically elected President. He has to carry out his promised mandate, and if he fails people will not re-elect him after five years. Or if he goes beyond the Law, people have the right to kick him out, either through parliament or by direct street action. It is interesting to see that you had supported Hassan Saeed so much a few months ago, when presidential election was on the horizon, but you have now come to your senses and realised the true nature of Hassan Saeed. Maldivians do not need another dictator, whether benevolent or not. Please spend 10 minutes after writing each of your blog posts just asking yourself the question if your blog post is stupid or not, before you publish the post.

  36. Have you even studied Singaporean politics. or even Malaysian. do we want another one-party system? do we want all political talk to be stifled? do we want prisoners to disappear without a trace? do we want our housing, our assemblies and our schools to become a drama orchestrated by the government? not only that even the way we meet people, get married have babies??? all of this happens in Singapore. don't look at only the outside. look inside and you will find things you don't like. we need to work to find something that works for Maldives not something that has worked for others. Pres. Nasheed is on it i believe. working towards it. but he needs to take responsibility for some actions he takes without any constitutional backing. cant keep n blaming 30 years for all his problems...

  38. Singapore - a family dictatorship with corporate business sense and spin

Singapore would appear PRO-BUSINESS on the outside, yet when you actually live there you will see that if you don't follow the COMPANY/COUNTRY policy you will endure and suffer the consequences of the Singapore Family Owned/Monopolistic Corporate Tactics.

So what happens if you disagree with the Singapore's country's/company policy? Well, the ruling Family Dictatorship through it's People's Action Party (PAP), will use it's country/company LAWYERS, to sue you to near bankruptcy. Next, the county, through it's LEGAL SYSTEM will force you into bankruptcy and then if you can't pay, or the courts find you with criminal behavior, they will put you in jail.

Singapore's People's Action Party (PAP) is a one-party system that is unlike America's two party system via Democrats and Republicans. The People's Action Party has never lost a general election since Singapore was founded in the 1960's. And they win 99% of the time!
