Are we depending on India too much!

Though most people generally welcome the prospect of mega-Indian companies investing in various sectors in the Maldives, there are some voices who express concern that India and Indian mega-companies are being given too much control of our commerce sector and that this could, in the long run lead to the detriment of our national security and political independence.

The new government of President Nasheed (pic) should be commended for opening up our business sector and attracting foreign investment, but some analysts say that more effort should be put in to attract investors from other countries and regions such as the United States, Europe, Japan, China, the Middle East and more.
In a related story, Indian media reported that, India, the second-largest wheat producer in the world, recently eased a near 16-month-old ban to export 29,177 tonnes of wheat flours to Maldives.

"The prohibition imposed on export of wheat flour shall not be applicable to export of 29,177 tonnes of wheat flours during 2009-10 to Maldives through PEC Ltd," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification. The shipment of wheat flours to Maldives followed the announcement by Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution Akhilesh Prasad Singh in December 2008 to export up to two million tonnes of wheat to friendly nations.

While India seems to be doing a lot to help Maldives ride the current wave of economic depression, it has to be said that we should not depend too much on India, lest we lose everything if India pulls the rug from under our feet if we do or say something that the Indians do not like.

  5. I am not sure about whether most of these so called MOU's can be executed, because those MOU's are just an "interest" so there is a possibility that any time Indian companies can withdraw their interest, therefore it is too early to make a judgment on the investments.

I think Bushry has highlighted an important point with regard to free and fair trade considering a balance portfolio of countries, it is not a wise decision to simply open the trade doors to only one nation, however the fundamental reason for open trade deals(MOU's)to India is not clear, the consequences might be different to understand at this challenging time frame.

  6. I am sorry that India is mentioned by name but the truth of the matter is that, in international relations, all countries are on their own. This idea has to sink into our national psyche sooner rather than later.

It is pure naivety to think that big countries, the EU, USA, and evern international organizations are there there to 'help'... no..hell no.. they are either doing a job or pushing an agenda. Simple as that.

At the end of the day a country has to take care of it on its own. What would and why should India ignore its poor and destitute to help another foreign country like the Maldives? To believe that it is generosity is the height of naivety. But that does not mean we should be ungrateful to those who help us, especially India.

Having said that, your post points to a real isssue in Maldives foreign relations of the maldives and it has nothing to do with India. There is a misguided belief that foreign relations is a solution for all problems including the financing national budget. There in lies the misguided belief that foreign aid is good. But nothing can be further from the truth.

In the end a nation has to take of itself on its own. If Maldivians are too big headed to try it differently, that would would be either be a global first or a complete disaster.

The international relations of maldives should not be determined by few big headed guys who think they know it all. Not at all. The relations we have with other countries should be an outcome of domestic policy. Foreign policy should be derived from domestic policy. Maldives seems to have it the wrong way round.

  7. President Nasheed has consistently talked about transparency. While, as Shahym mentioned above, these MOUs amount to an 'interest' only, the fact that President Nasheed has signed this unilaterally - without opening this to other countries questions the degree of transparency..

first we have to ban indian movies which is corrupting our society. we dont need taakur or 'sar' concept.

  14. Yes we are depending on India too much. Maldives is an independence country. Now countries do not use weapons and swards to attack a country. Now they use political ways to play other countries politics. So in this five year India will lead Maldives. There is no way that Anni can lead this nation without them. Everyone has to believe that. Even thought you do not like that. Thanks

  15. Kerafa naseems foreign investment policy we have seen in addu wit garment factories. The vegetable they brought were duty free. The srilankans brought duty unpaid vegetables for the the factory workers and sold them locally in addu. we have seen how they formulate foregn investments.

  16. It is indeed a very poor strategy for the current government to depend so much on one country. It almost seems like the Maldives' foreign policy is shaped to deal with India.

How about using all the untapped oportunities in other countries? Govrnment in terms of its attitude and dealings, have closed its doors to others who are interested, like China for example.

Unless there is a priority change and some strategies fo balance international relations/commercial cooperation, Maldives will not be in a desirable position with relation to regional/international negotiations & development in general.

I am suprised that he took 25 members with him, while the nations is suffering economically, Why dont you calculate the cost for this trip and put an article? Remember, ours is the true religion, we are born in Islam, we survive in Islam by criticizing and making fun of other religion, we die in Islam by showing to the world that we are true Muslims. We Maldivians should learn to live good Muslims by helping others and not criticizing and making fun at other religion. Hassan Moosa from Baa Atoll.

  28. Accept it or not, Maldives need India.. we are not as self-sufficient as we think we are... Tomorrow if there is a war, one of the first countries to suffer will be Maldives... and I think people need to be more respectful not just of Indians, people of any other nation... Just go outside the small bubble we live in and you'll realize that people dont think we are the greatest human beings on earth either..

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why Maldives is not a self-sufficient country? What did the great dictator, Gayoom did in 30 years? We will become self-sufficient only if all the able bodied and able minded people work in our country! Look at our youth! Most of them are lazy. They do not want to learn any skill and get employed. If these youth study in a school, they fight, make fun at teachers, head masters and supervisors. These students get the curse of their teachers, head masters, supervisors and even from their parents. Then, tell me how Maldivian youth will prosper in their future life? Go to any islands in the Maldives, you find smoking! Don't you think it is a curse on our youth and elder people?

We could have become self-sufficient long back. But the fact is that we are unwilling to work and hire the foreign workers. You find foreign workers in large numbers in construction sector, education sector, nurses, doctors, workers at provision shops and even domestic workers!! How much wealth from our country goes to foreign country? Most of these foreign workers spend less in the Maldives. They save money, there by not consuming in our country and this has effect on our economy!!

I would suggest that let every Maldivian, who is able minded and able bodied work in the Maldives and contribute something to the national income and let everyone do something to the nation building.

    Hassan Moosa from Baa Atoll.

  31. We can build our country... Of course we can... provided that our youth has the "guts". But the point right now is how? A great percentage of our youth cannot even stand straight. Some of them even though has the ability to think logically, they do not even bother to, even if they think they take no action. Only a minority is working truly to straighten our country. Former President of Maldives and his cronies has taken a huge portion (almost totally) of our treasuries leaving almost nothing behind from the day he vowed. In a situation like this what can we do? We should never let them get away like that. But that comes second. (This is also one of the master plans of the so-called golhabo, who actually is a mastermind on the left, down side of the axis).First we have to survive. But again how? Thanks to you Maumoon, you are gaddaa ingey. You have served your and our country very well. You have put us in this dire situation. You will have to pay for this one day. Our first priority should be given to find ways we need to survive. And our new President Muhammadh Nasheed is doing the very thing. And I thank him truly. "Everyone is innocent unless proven guilty" just like Maumoon since we obeyed him blindly as a result of his magic tricks. But now we are more aware of the affairs going around us. Regarding this too, credits goes to DO and President Nasheed. But Mr. President, our situation is critical, more critical than we can even imagine. And I along with others who hope for a better Maldives wish and hope that you know what you do and you do the right thing.

  32. hi all interesting reading. many maldivins have become so accustomed to foreign aid that now they dont want indian aid but rather american aid.this is really crazy. the maldivian mentality needs to change. there has to be more discipline in daily life. learn manners. stop abusing others verbally physically. one day everyone has tostand in judgement before god. if you will sin like this then gods judgement will come very soon. reform repent while there is still time
