Ex-president Gayyoom and Yamin should be made answerable

The Ousted ex-president of the Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has been sent a summon to attend the Presidential Commission investigating cases of corruption related to his ironfisted 30-year-rule. The notice was initially sent around 6:00 on Thursday evening but he refused to accept it, claiming that the Commission does not have the legal mandate to summon him. Dictator’s younger brother and former Trade Minister, Yamin also refused to attend the Commission claiming it had no legal mandate. Yamin was later questioned by Police in relation to the matter on the request of the Commission.

According to the Commission, setup by President Nasheed in May, Gayyoom is being summoned to make some inquiries and clarify some issues. Gayyoom’s officials say that they will submit a formal letter on Sunday (19tyh July) stating why he will not attend the commission.

As stated previously in this blog, this country will not heal until the ex-dictator (Gayyoom) and his corrupt cronies are brought to justice. Commission or no-commission, these people will have to be made answerable to the people to clarify many outstanding issues that involve millions of dollars of corruption. Whether Gayyoom or his cronies are responsible for those corruption has to be decided once and for all by a fair and free trial. Any resistance from Gayyoom and Yamin and any of their cronies could be seen as a blatant attempt to delay justice and a possible attempt to hide something.

  4. It is very sad to see that even judges are sometimes working on the interests of political parties. Especially people representing the former government. Our democracy is in an infant stage and if the people representing Judiciary are politically influenced it is clear signs that democracy has already begun to erode. Today the constitution protects the Judiciary. I hope the people representing it realizes the word intergrity.

  6. Thats the reason why Aneesa came with a bill to the parliament to protect her supremo, so that no one can laid their hand on Qayoom against any violation of individual rights, corruption, or leakage of money what should have been in our reserves.

They had ripped this beautiful island nation with all the foreign currency earned.. Those who are protecting got all the posts fame & glory. Got rewards from qayyoom to the extent of getting their daughters & sons sent to the best Universities in this world.

  7. i think bringing former dictator Golhaabo to justice is very important for our future. He had allegedly plundered millions of dollars from state resources and probably hid money in offshore tax heavens. we must probe into his and his family’s alleged crimes against our people.

  8. maumoon blah blah.. his cronies. yada yada.. embezzlement yakity yakity yak yak! konfadha bodu balaa eh tha bushry kale aa hedhi! why are you losing your slyp ovr maumoon & his 'cronies'. keeps you up at nite, doesnt he? u nyd to get into a rehabilitation institute or seek some therapy.

& why only maumoon & yamin? why not zaki, munavvar, sato & all the real cronies that was kicked off from the ex govt & now joined the MDP just because they didnt get to have their 'cut'? you really are a hypocrite u know. i have waited long & patient not to comment on anything you say, but you have become just too damn pathetic. i used to admire you bush. i had passion for journalism & i looked upto you. but god knows why or what maumoon didnt grant you, you are opening you mouth so wide against him. & dont give me the 'oh i care about my beautiful country' crap! yes, with the way you are now, thats utter crap coming from your mouth! you used to be one who came up with constructive criticism. what happened to that bushry? what happened to your ethics of fair journalism. if you are to condemn maumoon or raise your voice to bring him into justice, you should talk considering both sides. im not saying maumoon is faultless. we all know what kind of person he is. & i know what kind of people MDP has.

its very sad for me (again, for me) to see a journalist whom i had admired so much, fail. failed to be the person whom i thought he was. im not mad at you, but i am disappointed in myself for looking up to a person who can change just like that. for the worse.
